Dr. Rasmi Mullur is a pioneering endocrinologist known for her integrative approach to diabetes care. Her upcoming talk, ‘Whole Health Approach to Diabetes Care,’ at this year’s conference will reflect her expertise in mind-body and integrative approaches for patients with diabetes, as well as her leadership at the VA in implementing Whole Health.
Dr. Mullur is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at the David Geffen School of Medicine. She was recently appointed as the inaugural Director of Integrative Medicine Education for DGSOM where she is pioneering a longitudinal 4-year curriculum in integrative medicine that is embedded within all mandatory courses at the medical school.
Dr. Mullur earned her medical degree at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center, and completed her residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Mullur then finished her Endocrinology fellowship at the VA Greater Los Angeles and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center during which time she sought additional training in Integrative Medicine. Dr. Mullur continued her post-graduate education with fellowships at UCLA in both clinical research and medical education. Dr. Mullur’s comprehensive training led her to pioneer novel clinical programs in integrative health for patients with chronic pain, stress, diabetes, and hormonal disorders.
Dr. Mullur’s clinical practice at the UCLA Gonda Diabetes Center is focused on the use of integrative, mind-body approaches in the management and care of patients with diabetes and hormonal disorders. Her clinical interests include the use of yoga and mind-body approaches for diabetes, integrative approaches for stress management and fatigue, and the judicious use of herbal and micronutrient supplements in chronic disease. Her philosophy as a physician prioritizes learning her patients’ stories to deliver personalized and compassionate medical care rooted in deep respect for her patients.
Dr. Mullur has pioneered several clinical, research, and educational programs using both integrative medicine as well as digital technology for the management of chronic disease. She began one of the first tele-yoga programs for veterans in 2012 at the Greater Los Angeles VA, a program that has now expanded across the nation. She was selected as the Chief of Telehealth at the VA Greater Los Angeles since 2019. In this role, she oversees the implementation and delivery of virtual health across the entire health system. She serves on the national Tele-Whole Health taskforce for the VA, and is a national leader on the use of integrative medicine in the virtual setting.
Finally, Dr. Mullur is leading efforts to prioritize health equity in Integrative medicine. As a women of Indian heritage, she is ensuring that cultural humility is recognized in the adoption of traditional practices in integrative medicine, and in this effort redesigned the VA yoga teacher training to address health equity and cultual approporiation. She advocates for greater inclusion and access to integrative medicine for patients with disability and works closely with the health equity leadership at UCLA. She serves on the BIPOC advisory board for the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine where she has helped the organization train its board and staff on the principles of health equity and justice. She also serves on the DEI Advisory committee for the Academic Consortium of Integrative Medicine & Health to foster health equity within academic institutions.
